Duna rover "Opportunistic" to arrive at Duna in about 120 days
Year 16, Day 90
The KSA has just unveiled their new Duna rover: Opportunistic.
Yes, it has indeed been confirmed, the KSA is going back to Duna, this time with a brand new shiny and much more complex rover!
This rover is a bit larger than the last one (Triumph), and is built like an absolute tank. Let's go over what makes this rover so much more powerful than the last one made:
- Very large and extremely efficient solar arrays
- Way more electrical charge
- Better computerized systems
- More science experiments
- Far better antennae
- Six wheels built for more intense conditions
- Extremely long range
After the rover absolutely exceeded in on-Kerbin tests such as driving, obstacle avoidance, and instrument functionality + communication functionality, the KSA finally gave the greenlight; Opportunistic was ready to be sent to Duna!
The rover plus its special descent stage (just a bunch of air-filled cushion sacks basically) were launched aboard the GDLV4 payload rocket fit for Duna travel. After launch, the rocket shot into a parking orbit around Kerbin, and after more pre-flight checks were passed, the rocket shot off for Duna after doing a controlled burn.
It is now expected the journey to Duna will take around 120 days or so. That's about 18 Kerbin months. 18 months of being stuck inside a little fairing... poor little rover. But, when it lands, oh boy, it will be so worth it.
